If you're looking for a tailored learning experience or a mentor relationship, a one on one session can quickly get you on your way to making some beautiful projects.

Whether you’re stuck on a particular technique, or just want some advice to help you along the way, spending a few hours with someone who knows the traditional methods can save you hours of hard work and frustration in the long run.

Taking our Practical Woodworking 101 course is a prerequisite for private instruction.

Here are a few examples of things we can cover:

Drawing to scale and making a plan, cabinet making, workbench design, advanced joinery techniques, dovetailing by hand and machine, doors and drawers, inlay, box making, live edge furniture, finishing, bent lamination techniques, breadboard end construction, working with veneer and more.

In the weeks prior to our lesson, we'll talk about your goals and ambitions.  As a woodworker that was trained by a master woodworker, I know the things we can cover that will challenge you just enough.  There is a logical progression of skills in woodworking and I can help come up with a lesson plan that makes you grow as a woodworker.

Testimonials

Through the insightful suggestions, deep mechanical knowledge, and hard work of Rob Spiece, my two-car garage here in Northern Virginia was transformed into a efficiently configured, fully functional home woodshop. Rob worked elbow-to-elbow with me—tirelessly and patiently—on two different days to set up floor-model tools direct from the shipping crate. He helped me to establish a logical workflow and proper positioning for my floor and bench tools. Rob brings valuable, in-the-trenches “know-how” and “know-why.” It’s great to just listen and observe, and soak up the learning. He is a down-to-earth, easy-to-work-with asset to anyone’s woodshop. I have derived so much additional enjoyment and satisfaction from my own woodshop since Rob spent time here with me. Hire him—he is a tremendous resource!

I want to thank you for the time and effort you gave me today. I was really having a difficult time with the dovetail jig, and rather than spend undo time and effort, I knew you would be able to figure out the problem. I didn’t realize how fast it was to resolve and how simple you made it. I now feel very comfortable with the jig and am sure I will be able to deal with it in the future.
